“I thought that nobody was talking about what I thought were the most important things,” Steyer noted.

His top issue as he campaigns for president remains combating climate change.

“I’ve said publicly, repeatedly, that it’s my number one priority,” Steyer said. “I don’t think there’s anyone else running for president who will say that.”

And he repeated his pledge to “declare a state of emergency on day one” if he wins the White House.

Steyer warned that “by and large the world is not coming close to meeting” the Paris global agreement on climate change.

Steyer predicted the battle against climate change can help reunite a country living daily with a bitter partisan divide.
