Rural communities — from river towns to tribal lands to farms — are on the front lines of climate change. Yet too often, rural Americans are told they’re part of the problem. To truly meet this national challenge, we need to enlist all Americans — rural and urban. As I experienced firsthand in Afghanistan, when you bring Americans from different parts of the country together, you create the strongest fighting force on earth. And we need that same unity and purpose on climate, so that an energy-independent farm near Cresco becomes as much a symbol of confronting climate disruption as an electric vehicle in Los Angeles.
